Succes voor Monteiro en Lopez op Slovakiaring, podium voor Catsburg

De twee FIA WTCC-races op de Slovakiaring zijn gewonnen door Tiago Monteiro en Jose-Maria Lopez. Monteiro gaat na twee raceweekenden aan de leiding van het WK, op één puntje gevolgd door Lopez.

Race één zag lange tijd Mehdi Bennani aan het front. De Marokkaanse Citroën-coureur startte vanaf de tweede plek en nam bij de start de leiding, kort gevolgd door Monteiro's Honda en diens teamgenoot Rob Huff. Het zou tot de negende ronde duren voordat Monteiro een gaatje vond om Bennani te passeren. Dat deed hij met overtuiging, waarna hij zijn eerste zege van het seizoen wist te pakken. De Nederlanders wisten geen potten te breken in de eerste race. Nick Catsburg werd elfde en Tom Coronel werd kleurloos vijftiende.

In race twee was alles anders. Lopez pakte de leiding, voor Catsburg en Yvan Muller. Terwijl Muller zich moest verdedigen ten opzichte van de Honda's van Monteiro, Huff en Norbert Michelisz, ging Catsburg in de aanval bij Lopez. Dat deed hij met succes en al snel bouwde hij een klein gaatje naar de regerend kampioen. De laatste ronde gaf uiteindelijk de doorslag. Lopez ging op topsnelheid voorbij Catsburg en ook Monteiro profiteerde van de slipstream, waarmee de race om het podium beslist werd. Tom Coronel haalde met zijn tiende plaats ook een puntje binnen.

Er zijn jaren geweest waar ik nog met plezier naar de WTCC keek. Maar dat dit uitgedunde veld het World Touring Car Championship heet ... Lijkt nergens meer op.

Echt jammer dat Catsburg het niet nog 2 rondjes vol kon houden. Maar zeer goed gedaan met een podium plaats.
Coronel niet zijn beste weekend. De baan was niet op hand van de chevrolets dit keer.

  Wat dat betreft kies je nu nét het verkeerde jaar uit om deze reactie te plaatsen. 2013 wasren de RML Chevrolets oppermachtig, als opvolger van jarenlange overheersing van het officiële Daewoo-team, gekocht door chevrolet. En ook 2014 en 2015 waren dodelijk saai met alleen Citroens vooraan en de rest ergens op een ronde achterstand. nu hebben ze echter besloten de Citroen standaard 80 kilo extra te geven om de derde Citroen-show wat in te dammen, en dat lijkt te werken. Was best een leuk weekend en goed gereden van Catsburg. Wat een telefoontje van Jaap van Lagen al niet kan doen voor je carrière.
