Tiago Monteiro pakt thuisoverwinning in spannende eerste race

Tiago Monteiro heeft zijn eerste overwinning van het seizoen gescoord op zijn thuiscircuit in Portimao. De Portugees bleef in een spannende slotfase de Chevrolet van Yvan Muller voor. Tom Coronel kende een sterke race en eindigde als zesde.

Monteiro kwam goed weg bij de rollende start van de race en leidde comfortabel tot halfweg. Daarna kwam Yvan Muller steeds dichterbij, maar Monteiro weerstond twee aanvallen van de Chevrolet-coureur en pakte zijn eerste overwinning in twee jaar tijd.

Muller moest op zijn beurt weer oppassen voor Gabriele Tarquini en Augusto Farfus, die in de laatste paar ronden erg dichtbij het leidende duo kwamen. Farfus profiteerde van een fout bij Rob Huff, die enkele ronden voor het einde tegen de muur reed. Hierdoor eindigde Farfus als vierde, Huff op een ronde achterstand als achttiende.

Alain Menu pakte de vijfde plaats, gevolgd door Tom Coronel die nog profiteerde van het uitvallen van Jordi Gene met een lekke band. Norbert Michelisz eindigde als zevende, terwijl Fredy Barth met zijn achtste positie de tweede race vanaf de pole mag vertrekken.
