Monteiro brengt thuispubliek in extase met overwinning

Vorig jaar kende Tiago Monteiro weinig succes in zijn thuisrace op het stratencircuit van het Portugese Vila Real. De voormalig F1-coureur van Jordan en Midland crashte zelfs zeer zwaar. Dit jaar is alles anders: Monteiro startte de hoofdrace vanaf pole en bracht het thuispubliek in extase door naar de overwinning te rijden.

Monteiro kreeg de overwinning zeker niet cadeau. De hele race was er druk van Citroën-coureur Yvan Muller. Even lukte het Monteiro om weg te rijden, maar het verschil met Muller aan de finish was minder dan een seconde. Norbert Michelisz bezette de laagste podiumtrede.

In tegenstelling tot de eerste race kenden de Nederlanders weinig succes. Daar waar Tom Coronel de eerste race nog wist te winnen vanaf pole, startte de Nederlander de hoofdrace van plek tien. Coronel kreeg tijdens de race een doorrijstraf en finishte op een zestiende plaats. Nick Catsburg kwam er ook niet aan te pas in de hoofdrace.

De volgende races in het WTCC laten nog even op zich wachten. Pas in het weekend van 6 augustus komen de heren weer in actie. Het circus strijkt dan neer in Argentinië.
