Droomresultaat voor Honda op Twin Ring Motegi

Voor thuispubliek heeft Honda het beste resultaat gescoord in de openingsrace van het FIA WTCC-weekend op de Twin Ring Motegi. Norbert Michelisz startte van pole position en won ook de wedstrijd. Ook de twee andere podiumplaatsen waren voor Honda. Nick Catsburg scoorde een zevende plaats, Tom Coronel wist geen punten te scoren.

Voor Michelisz is het zijn eerste overwinning van het seizoen. Bij de start probeerde Tom Chilton het bij Volvo-coureur Thed Björk, maar de broer van Max Chilton viel snel terug naar een achtste plaats. Björk daarentegen ging in de aanval en probeerde het bij Honda-coureur Rob Huff. In plaats van in te halen werd Björk verschalkt door de Honda van Tiago Monteiro.

Tweevoudig kampioen Jose Maria Lopez startte in zijn Citroën als tiende en wist zich op te werken naar een vierde plaats. Tijdens zijn inhaalrace kwam hij Nick Catsburg in de LADA tegen. Beide heren raakten elkaar, maar konden door. Catsburg finishte uiteindelijk op een zevende plaats.
