Thed Björk pakt eerste overwinning voor Volvo in spannende race

Volvo heeft de eerste overwinning te pakken in het WTCC. Thed Björk pakte de overwinning door in de laatste ronde in de een na laatste bocht de Honda van Norbert Michelisz te passeren. Nick Catsburg scoorde een prima resultaat in zijn LADA door als vijfde over de meet te komen.

Bij de start was Michelisz beter weg dan pole-sitter John Filippi. Lang leek het erop dat Michelisz naar zijn tweede overwinning op rij in een openingsrace onderweg was. Zijn voorsprong werd zelfs nog groter toen Tom Chilton en Gabriele Tarquini in gevecht raakten en elkaar raakten. Beide heren moesten de pits in.

Björk profiteerde en pakte zo de tweede plaats. De Zweed reed het gat naar Michelisz langzaam dicht, mede omdat Michelisz met een zwaardere auto onderweg was. Michelisz lag bij het ingaan van de laatste ronde nog steeds op kop, maar op het lange rechte stuk richting de hairpin wist Björk het gat helemaal te dichten. Michelisz en Björk raakten elkaar kort, maar niets zat de eerste zege van Björk meer in de weg.

Achter Björk en Michelisz kwamen Citroën-coureurs Yvan Muller en kersvers kampioen Jose Maria Lopez als derde en vierde over de meet. Nick Catsburg verloor nog een plek aan het einde van de race. De Nederlander lag vierde, maar raakte Michelisz in de hairpin in de laatste ronde. Dit bood Lopez de mogelijkheid er voorbij te gaan. Catsburg had schade en het is maar de vraag of hij vanaf de eerste rij kan starten in de tweede race.

Hugo Valente werd zesde, voor een sterk rijdende Tom Coronel. In de tweede Volvo werd Frederik Ekblom achtste. terwijl Rob Huff en Tiago Monteiro namens Honda de top tien afsloten.
