Coronel: "Onmogelijke mogelijk gemaakt"

Tom Coronel kijkt met een tevreden gevoel terug op het voorbije seizoen in het World Touring Car Championship. Met alleen nog het slotweekend in Qatar te gaan staat de teller voor de Nederlander op twee overwinningen dit jaar. Toch is een derde plek in het kampioenschap voor privateers het hoogst haalbare. Hij moet Mehdi Bennani en Tom Chilton in hun Citroëns voor zich dulden.

Dat is geen schande, vindt Coronel. "We hebben dit jaar betere resultaten met de Chevrolet behaald dan ooit. Twee zeges en een tweede plek, daarmee hebben we de verwachtingen ruimschoots overtroffen. Ik wist dat er mogelijkheden zouden liggen in Marrakech en Vila Real en die hebben we gepakt. Theoretisch gezien was het dit jaar onmogelijk om races te winnen met mijn oude Cruze, maar we hebben dit jaar het onmogelijke mogelijk gemaakt."

"Dat komt door slimmigheidjes van ROAL Motorsport en mijzelf. Zolang je een lootje koopt, bestaat de kans dat je de loterij een keer wint. Als je geen lootje koopt, weet je zeker dat je de loterij niet zult winnen. Natuurlijk waren onze kansen kleiner dan die van anderen, maar we hebben het wel gedaan en daar hebben we veel aandacht voor gekregen. Dat bezorgt mijn sponsors weer een goed gevoel en mijn band met ROAL Motorsport is hechter dan ooit."

En wie betaalt de lootjes van jouw loterij, Tom? Ik moet ze helaas zelf betalen... Geen loterij dus voor mij. En inderdaad ook geen winst. Minder uitgaven, dat dan weer wel.

  HEMEX@ daar heb je sponsors voor. En die moet hij met veel geduld en goede argumenten zien binnen te halen. Je doet net of alles komt aanwaaien bij hem. Tim en Tom zijn één van de weinigen die het internationaal vrij goed doen bij privateer teams. En zij doen ook niet voor niets dit jaar weer mee aan de Dakar rally. En ja, ook hier voor hebben zij moeten lobbyen bij sponsoren.
