WTCC-topman hielp Catsburg aan stoeltje

Dat Nick Catsburg komend seizoen nog behoort tot het gilde der World Touring Car Championship-coureurs heeft hij voor een groot deel te danken aan WTCC-baas Francois Ribeiro. Catsburg kwam op straat te staan nadat Lada onverwacht de stekker uit het WTCC-project trok, maar Volvo wierp hem deze winter een reddingsboei toe.

Op aandringen van Ribeiro, dat wel. De Telegraaf citeert de WTCC-topman: "Ik heb voor Nicky de deur bij Volvo geopend door hem aan te bevelen. Hij is snel, kent het kampioenschap en is een goede vent. Het is nu aan hem om zich te bewijzen." Met Tom Coronel heeft Nederland nog een troef in het WTCC. "Tom hoort gewoon bij de familie. Hij betekent veel voor het WTCC. Hij is altijd goed voor actie op maar ook buiten de baan met zijn activiteit op social media."

Ribeiro verwacht een open kampioenschap na het afhaken van het dominante fabrieksteam van Citroën. "Het wordt het meest open kampioenschap sinds 2007/2008. Ik denk dat de helft van het veld in staat is om de titel te winnen, omdat er geen dominante kracht meer is."

Op basis van zijn skills hoort hij ook gewoon thuis in dit kampioenschap, maar bedankt voor de hulp Monsieur Ribeiro.
