Monteiro ontbreekt op doktersadvies in China

Kampioenschapsleider Tiago Monteiro doet komend weekend niet mee aan de races van het World Touring Car Championship op Ningbo International Speedpark. De Portugees ondervindt nog te veel naweeën van de lichamelijke ongemakken die hij vorige maand bij een testongeluk opliep. Bij het ongeluk in Barcelona raakten enkele zenuwen bekneld, waardoor zijn zicht nu wat minder is.

De artsen hebben Monteiro op het hart gedrukt dat dit van tijdelijke aard is, maar op doktersadvies verschijnt hij dit weekend niet aan de start in China. "Ik ben zeer teleurgesteld dat ik niet kan racen in China. Als team hebben we hard gewerkt om bovenaan te staan in de tussenstand en dit is voor alle betrokkenen een harde klap. Het menselijke lichaam is wat het is. Ondanks de inspanningen van het medische team heb ik gewoon meer tijd nodig. Ik richt me op een terugkeer op Motegi."

Honda heeft Gabriele Tarquini opgeroepen als vervanger van Monteiro. "Ik ben blij om namens Honda terug te keren in het WTCC, al had ik het liever onder leukere omstandigheden gedaan. Tiago is een fantastische coureur die verdiend als leider in het kampioenschap door het leven gaat en het is spijtig dat hij dit weekend moet missen. Ik ga mijn best doen om hem zo goed mogelijk te vervangen. Met mijn ervaring en een gloednieuw circuit hoop ik mooie resultaten neer te kunnen zetten", aldus de Italiaan.
