Tom Coronel blij met fusie van WTCC en TCR

Tom Coronel is laaiend enthousiast over de fusie tussen het World Touring Car Championship en de TCR International Series. Die twee klasses smelten voor 2018 samen in de World Touring Car Cup, de WTCR. Coronel juicht die beslissing van de internationale autosportbond FIA toe.

Aan De Telegraaf deelde hij mede: "Ik zat hier al twee jaar op de wachten. De fusie is de enige oplossing om de toerwagenracerij te laten overleven. We gaan nu terug naar de basis zoals racen is bedoeld, met veel wedstrijden en veel verschillende wagens."

"Deze serie is mij als privé-rijder op het lijf geschreven. Het is financieel aantrekkelijker, de races zijn leuker met trekken en duwen, maar nog belangrijker is dat ik nu zelf de auto kan kiezen om mee te racen. In het WTCC was ik op wagens aangewezen waarmee ik niet kon strijden tegen de fabrieksteams."

Coronel is reeds met ROAL Motorsport in gesprek over de mogelijkheden voor de WTCR.

In de nieuwe WTCR-klasse mogen geen fabrieksteams aan de start verschijnen maar een fabrikant mag privéteams wel ondersteunen. Ook zullen er volgend jaar 3 races per weekend worden verreden. (30 races in 10 weekenden)

    Ik begrijp wel dat je als Coronel zijnde blij bent. Groter veld om te racen, aantrekkelijker voor sponsoren met meer races op waarschijnlijk Eurosport. Je kan weer een keer proberen te strijden voor een kampioenschap met de juiste wagen. Hij had de laatste jaren ook echt de afgeschreven wagens in het wtcc. En ik heb trouwens niet zo'n hoge pet op van Roal. Leuk team, maar als je ziet wat ze bij de concurrenten uit diezelfde auto's konden halen, vroeg ik me altijd af wat ze met de chevy deden.

    betekend dit nu dat de fabrieksteams niet meer bestaan in de nieuwe klasse?? of is de privateer CC uitgebreid?

    Hoop dat ie kan tekenen voor Leopard Team WRT. Dat is het beste team uit de TCR International series, en is het team van z'n oude maatje Vincent Vosse. Dan kunnen we hem wellicht eens echt vooraan zien.
    Bovendien ligt Belgie meer in de buurt voor hem dan Italie..
