Rob Huff verslaat teamgenoot Muller voor eerste zege van 2011

Rob Huff heeft zojuist de eerste race van het nieuwe WTCC-seizoen gewonnen. De Britse Chevrolet-rijder was zijn teamgenoot en regerend kampioen Yvan Muller te snel af. Tom Coronel eindigde in zijn eerste race voor ROAL BMW keurig als vierde.

Aan kop van het veld was de strijd om de overwinning al vrij snel beslist. Dat wil zeggen, Chevrolet ging met de zege aan de haal. Rob Huff kwam goed weg vanaf de pole position en wist Yvan Muller op de finish 0.873 seconden achter zich te houden. Debutant Carlos Bueno reed een erg strakke race en kwam als derde aan de finish.

De meeste spektakel kwam bij Tom Coronel vandaan. De Nederlander kende een goede start en pakte meteen de vijfde plaats vanaf de achtste startpositie. Coronel voerde meteen de druk op bij Kristian Poulsen die daardoor even wijd ging en zijn vierde plaats verloor aan de kersverse BMW-rijder. De Deen gaf echter niet op en deelde een tik uit aan Coronel die weer terugviel naar de vijfde plaats. In de laatste ronde waagde de Nederlander echter nog een aanval en wist zo alsnog de vierde plaats te bemachtigen.

Poulsen, Alain Menu, Gabriele Tarquini en Michel Nykjaer maakten de top acht compleet. Robert Dahlgren eindigde met zijn Volvo als twaalfde en debutanten Pepe Oriola en Javier Villa volgden de Zweed.

Hij reed goed inderdaad. Toen Poulsen er voorbij kwam, had ik niet verwacht dat Tom Coronel zich nog terug kon vechten, maar hij deed dat toch. Race 2 begint over 5 minuten :)
