Norbert Michelisz scoort eerste pole, dramatische dag Coronel

Norbert Michelisz heeft verrassend de pole position voor de eerste WTCC-race in Slowakije gescoord. De Hongaarse coureur was in het tweede deel van de kwalificatie ruim twee tienden sneller dan het Lukoil SEAT-duo Aleksei Dudukalo en Gabriele Tarquini. Voor Tom Coronel was het een sessie om snel te vergeten.

De Nederlander kreeg in het eerste gedeelte van de kwalificatie al een zwart/oranje vlag getoond door de wedstrijdleiding, omdat een achterdeur van zijn BMW open was blijven staan. Daardoor moest hij meteen terugkeren naar de pits om de deur te laten sluiten. Coronel had nog één ronde de tijd om zich te plaatsten voor Q2, maar met nog twaalf seconden op de klok werd de sessie afgevlagd met een 'code rood'.

De Nederlander bleef daardoor steken op slechts de dertiende plaats. Teamgenoot Alberto Cerqui behaalde het tweede gedeelte wel, maar start slechts één positie voor Coronel op de twaalfde plaats. Vooraan was het Michelisz die de vele Hongaarse fans op de banken liet staan. De BMW-coureur scoorde op het nieuwe circuit in Slowakije zijn allereerste WTCC-pole. Ook Aleksei Dudukalo behaalde zijn beste startpositie door de tweede tijd te rijden, net voor teamgenoot Tarquini.

James Nash zette zijn uitstekende kwalificatievorm ook in Slowakije door en eindigde als vierde. Tiago Monteiro reed sterk naar de vijfde plaats, gevolgd door Yvan Muller. De Fransman was op de zevende plaats pas de snelste Chevrolet-coureur. Hij werd gevolgd door teamgenoot Rob Huff, terwijl Alain Menu het met de negende startplaats moet doen.
