Rob Huff houdt teamgenoten achter zich in eerste race

Rob Huff heeft zojuist zijn tweede seizoenszege gescoord op de Salzburgring. De Britse coureur leidde van start tot finish, maar kreeg de overwinning zeker niet cadeau. Yvan Muller waagde verschillende aanvallen, maar moest uiteindelijk genoegen nemen met de tweede positie, voor Alain Menu.

Huff kende geen problemen bij de rollende start, net als zijn teamgenoten. De Brit werd gedurende de race nog wel flink aangevallen door Yvan Muller, die tweemaal zijn auto naast die van Huff zette, maar kon er niet aan voorbij komen. Dat leverde Huff de overwinning op met een voorsprong van drie tienden op Muller.

Samen met Huff en Muller was Alain Menu in het begin flink weggelopen bij de concurrentie. Na enkele ronden moest de Zwitser toch nog even in zijn spiegels kijken toen het veld weer bij elkaar kwam bij een safety car-fase. De auto van Stefano D'Aste stond vast in het grind na een touché met Darryl O'Young en moest worden weggehaald.

Meteen na de safety car liepen de drie Chevy's echter weer weg bij de rest en dus kon Menu makkelijk zijn derde plaats veiligstellen. Gabriele Tarquini eindigde ruim twee seconden achter Menu als vierde, gevolgd door Tiago Monteiro, Alex MacDowall en Pepe Oriola. Tom Coronel profiteerde van enkele touches in het veld en kwam als achtste over de streep. Enkele ronden na de start van de race was de Nederlander teruggevallen tot de veertiende stek.

Bij de start van de tweede race, die om 14:35 uur van start gaat, staat Coronel op de tweede positie.
