Coronel op het podium na tijdstraf voor Muller

Startend vanaf de tiende plaats wist Tom Coronel de eerste race van het World Touring Car Championship op het circuit van Sjanghai met een mooie vierde plaats af te sluiten. De tweede race begon de 40-jarige coureur in de ROAL Motorsport BMW 320 TC vanaf pole position en ook deze race eindigde voor hem met een vierde plaats achter de drie ongenaakbare fabrieks Chevrolets Cruze.

Een tijdstraf van 30 seconden resulteerde er echter in dat Yvan Muller na afloop in de uitslag werd teruggezet, waardoor Coronel alsnog de beker voor de derde plaats kreeg toebedeeld. In de strijd om de wereldtitel bezet de Nederlander, met nog een raceweekend te gaan, de vijfde positie. In Sjanghai liep hij wel de nodige punten in op de als vierde geklasseerde Gabriele Tarquini. Coronel verzamelde tot nu toe 199 punten, Tarquini staat op 238 punten. Bovenaan heeft Rob Huff goede zaken gedaan. De Brit staat nu 35 punten voor op Alain Menu.
