WTCC-baas pookt interesse van autofabrikanten op

Van Citroen is bekend dat het belangstelling heeft om volgend jaar tot het World Touring Car Championship toe te treden en die interesse bestaat bij meer autofabrikanten. Dat verkondigt WTCC-promotor Marcello Lotti. Kia, Renault en Subaru zijn gelinkt aan een project voor de toerwagenserie. Chevrolet, BMW, Seat, Honda en Lada zijn reeds actief in het WTCC.

De organisatie is bezig met nieuwe reglementen, waarbij de nadruk ligt op krachtigere en meer aero-afhankelijke auto's. Lotti vertrouwde Autosport toe: "Van Citroen weet iedereen al dat ze geïnteresseerd zijn. Ze werken aan een project, samen met de FIA voor de technische specificaties, en alles gaat vooruit. Ik weet niet of en wanneer ze besluiten om het officieel te maken, maar ze hebben hun belangstelling bevestigd. Een werkgroep is in samenspraak met de FIA en de autofabrikanten opgesteld voor de evolutie van de reglementen. Alles is geregeld, de technische details behoeven geen werk meer. Het woord is aan de autofabrikanten, ze weten de voorwaarden en moeten nu aan de ontwikkeling van hun auto's beginnen. Honda heeft gedemonstreerd dat als je het gedegen aanpakt, direct succes mogelijk is."
