Stoddart heeft Champ Car-plannen

Oud Minardi-teambaas en eigenaar, Paul Stoddart, is van plan om een eigen Champ Car-team op te richten. Het is de bedoeling om in 2007 met een nieuwe team aan de Amerikaanse raceklasse aan de start te verschijnen, met de hulp van sponsor Muermans Group. Muermans was in het verleden sponsor van Jos Verstappen en is nu geldschieter van Robert Doornbos en de enige Belg in de Champ Car, Jan Heylen. Stoddart: "Champ Car is een fanvriendelijke raceserie en we hebben zeker plannen die kant op. Het is nog vroeg, maar we zijn ermee bezig."

Stoddart verkocht vorig jaar zijn Formule 1-team aan Red Bull, wat het omdoopte tot Scuderia Toro Rosso. Maar de Australiër wil graag in de racerij terugkeren. "Het is echt een top raceklasse. En wat ik helemaal goed vind, is dat ze de afgelopen jaren van de ovals zijn weggegaan en op normale en straatcircuits zijn gaan racen."

Doornbos is één van de coureurs die gesponsord wordt door Muermans en Stoddart geeft toe dat de Nederlander favoriet is voor een eventueel stoeltje. "Robert is een grote kandidaat, hij heeft de ervaring en hij is gewoon goed. Maar ook Bas Leinders en Zsolt Baumgartner zijn kandidaten."

Voordat de beslissing over coureurs gemaakt zal moeten worden moet eerst de beslissing genomen worden of er wel een team komt. "We hebben geen haast met die beslissing. In oktober wil ik weten wat we gaan doen."
